J.K. Rowling: Size vs. Brains

“Fat” is usually the first insult a girl throws at another girl when she wants to hurt her
I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain…

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’

‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’

What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.”

Inheritance

So I  just received a major distraction from my writing in the mail today, book four of Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle! I really want to start reading it, but I’m trying to resist until I get my daily word count in, but it’s hard. I’m hoping that if I stick to my guns and determine that I will not start reading until I get my word count in, that that will encourage me to pump those words out quickly!

We’ll see how it goes.

Looking for Inspiration

My writing yesterday felt flat and boring, it could be because I spent 5 hours in a Social Marketing class, before spending another two writing, but still I feel the need to spice my story up some, I’m just not sure how…

Perhaps it’s time to introduce a new character, or give one of my characters an interesting quirk, or maybe make the sky fall and make my characters deal with it.

Wish me luck I’m going to need it….

Hello world!

Lady Of The Pen here, signing in!

I just finished up a class on Social Networking and am taking a breather before going to a Write In for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)!

The creation of this blog is the direct result of my class, I do admit, but it seems like a good idea, at least for the moment. Though chances are I won’t have much time to post this month, since I’m trying to finish my fantasy novel for NaNoWriMo.

This is my fourth year doing NaNo and it’s quite a challenge now that I’m working. For some strange reason after a long day at work, I’m not brimming with creative energy that is just waiting to spill over into my computer screen. Instead I end up pounding away at the keyboard, completely free of anything remotely resembling a ‘creative zone.’ Yet somehow I’m managing to keep up with my word count.
